📖 Open book (approved bound references only). North Carolina is a two-exam license path — the Building trade exam plus a separate Business & Law exam (40 questions, a 90-minute time limit, and a 70% minimum score to pass). This prep gets you ready for both.

The Building trade exam covers estimating, plan reading, concrete, masonry, carpentry, site work, roofing, and safety; the separate Business & Law exam covers licensing law, contracts, liens, bonds, insurance, and business management. The real challenge isn't memorization — it's navigating the books fast enough to finish each exam in time.

Common Questions

North Carolina Building Contractor Exam FAQ

What's the difference between the Building and Residential exams?

Building (General) Contractor covers commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential construction. Residential Contractor covers only residential units. Both exams are open-book, 90 questions, 70% to pass — the Building exam runs 3 hr 20 min, Residential 3 hr 30 min — and each also requires a separate Business & Law exam (this prep covers it). The Building exam covers more scope. We offer prep for both — see our NC Residential Exam Prep.

Do I need to apply with the NCLBGC before taking the exam?

Yes. You apply to the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors at nclbgc.org first. Once approved, you schedule your PSI exam. We strongly recommend taking our prep class AFTER your application is approved so you know which classification (Limited/Intermediate/Unlimited) you're testing for.

What if I fail the exam?

NC sets no mandatory waiting period — you can retake as soon as you're ready (each attempt is another $79 PSI fee). Because the Study Vault is on-demand, you keep your access and can re-study any section as many times as you need before your next attempt. Most contractors who follow the study roadmap pass on their next try.

How long should I study?

Most successful candidates spend 4–6 weeks working through the Study Vault — enough to get fluent in book navigation and work through the practice questions. Some pass with less, but 4 weeks is the sweet spot. Study at your own pace.

When do I get access after I buy?

Instantly. The Study Vault is fully online and on-demand — once you purchase, you get access to all the training materials right away and can start studying immediately, on your own schedule.

Once I'm licensed, do I still need annual CE?

Yes — every North Carolina General Contractor must complete 8 hours of Continuing Education each year. See our NC Continuing Education page to plan your annual hours.

What reference books can I bring to the exam?

The NC Building exam permits eight bound reference books: the NC OSHA Construction Standards; the NASCLA Contractor's Guide to Business, Law, and Project Management (North Carolina General Contractor edition, 10th edition); the NC State Building Code: Building Code, 2018 edition; the NC Administrative Code & Policies, 2018 edition; Sports Fields: Design, Construction, and Maintenance; ACI 318 (the American Concrete Institute's structural concrete code); ACI 530 (the masonry code); and ANSI A117.1-2017 (the American National Standards Institute's accessibility standard). Always confirm the exact editions on the current PSI bulletin before buying.

What are the open-book rules?

You may use approved bound books only. Before the exam you can highlight, underline, and add permanent plastic tabs — but during the exam there's no writing in the books, no sticky-note flags, and no loose papers. A silent, non-programmable calculator is allowed.
